Air Liquide Expands Its Hydrogen Grip in the Gulf

Air Liquide is putting real money behind the hydrogen hype. The company announced in October 2025 a $50 million plan to expand and modernize its hydrogen network along the U.S. Gulf Coast, securing new long-term supply deals with two major refiners.

The investment strengthens a system that already spans Texas and Louisiana, anchored by the company’s vast Spindletop storage cavern near Beaumont. Rather than laying entirely new lines, Air Liquide is focusing on upgrades: better pipelines, advanced compressors, and integrated storage to move hydrogen faster and more efficiently to industrial customers.

For refiners, hydrogen is indispensable. It powers refining steps like hydrocracking and desulfurization, both key to producing cleaner fuels. As the pressure mounts to cut emissions, reliable hydrogen supply gives these companies the confidence to commit to lower-carbon operations. Matthieu Giard, Air Liquide’s head of the Americas, said the expansion underscores the firm’s long-term role in supporting U.S. industry as it adapts to new energy demands.

The move also reflects a turning point for hydrogen. After years of pilot projects and lofty promises, the market is shifting toward real infrastructure. The Gulf Coast, dense with refineries and industrial plants, is emerging as the proving ground. By improving existing assets, Air Liquide can move faster and secure market share before rivals build from the ground up.

Still, some observers caution that relying on older infrastructure could lock in fossil-based hydrogen for years to come. Others point to murky federal rules over what counts as “clean” hydrogen. Yet the new contracts suggest that customers, at least, are betting on hydrogen’s staying power.

In a maturing energy landscape, it is no longer about who can make hydrogen, it is about who can deliver it. For Air Liquide, that race is already well underway.
